helps and encouragement in homeschooling
Here is a list of books I recommend to any Christian mom considering homeschooling or in the midst of homeschooling. As they say, you gotta "eat the meat and spit out the bones" . I do not endorse or agree with every suggestion in these books, but there are some good ideas. That is for you and your family to pray about and pick and choose.
A seminar by Carole Joy Seid. I went to this back in 2004 . Some notes you may be able to find online. (or you can borrow mine)

homeschool misperceptions
I have been homeschooling for about 17 yrs. I read alot about homeschooling. I have read about How to homeschool, how to teach boys, how to teach girls, right brain learners, etc. I am not a college graduate. I do not have a teaching degree. I am not the best reader. Sometimes people look at my kids and say wow. They have this perception that I am this SUPER Teacher. Well I am not. I am just a woman trying to do what God called me to do.
When I got saved, I was 21 yrs old, with a 2 yr old daughter. A single mom, working my way up the corporate ladder, so to speak. One of my first friends at church was a mother of 3 boys and she homeschooled. This was the first I had ever heard of it. I had been in public school K-12 and taken some community college classes . The Lord started working on me about this and I was interested, my spirit was curious and my flesh didnt want to give up the business work that i had been doing. The Lord allowed circumstances that caused me to come home from work for 3 months, and after 3 months home with my daughter, I didnt want to go back. =-)
Fast forward a few years. I got married, had a few more children. Before Greg and I got married, we discussed children, how we would raise them and school them. We both believed that God wanted us to homeschool.
When we moved to Idaho, we had 5 children - ages 11, 5, 4, 1 1/2 yrs, and an 8 month old. We started our day reading the Bible and praying.
That is my #1 prescription for homeschooling. Read the Bible with the children and Pray. All 5 of my children learned to read using a basic phonics program and a King James Bible. Glory to God.
Now, the misperceptions I am talking about are many.
Here is one of them : "I am not smart enough to teach them. "
Now the public schools and other people would love for you to believe this. Just quit thinking you can do it and throw those kids out for the yellow bus to pick up. Its just not true. God gave you (and your husband) the wisdom to do what needs to be done with your kids.
There are so many I can't write about them all in one post. Todd Wilson hits alot of them in his book, Lies Homeschooling Moms Believe. I know that many people home school today without any type of spiritual guidance or direction. Many of them are unhappy with what they are getting in the public school setting. As a Christian, I believe if God wants you to do something, then He will help you do it. I have told the Lord many days, I dont know how to do this and I need your help and He helps me.

Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual GIfts. This is a topic that always has me perplexed. Whenever it is discussed I start to get DOWN on myself and think that I have NONE. Realizing this is not true (think on these things- whatsoever is TRUE), I hope to spend some time searching this out. Many times in my flesh I think of the gifts that man sees, preaching, teaching, playing piano and teaching Sunday school, other things that are in the SPOTLIGHT. There are many gifts that are behind the scenes. I dont like people looking at me. When I was a child, I took gymnastics for many years and I liked to do all of the cartwheels and routines and such. But when it came to being on the stage for all to see, UGH I hated it, dreaded it. I still dont care for being in front of an audience, I avoid it as much as possible. There have been a few times that the Lord asked me to speak or pray in front of a group of ladies and I have to spend alot of time in prayer and seeking HELP to make it thru. I CAN do it with the Lord's help, but I dont necessarily enjoy it.
Romans 12: 5-21 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation; he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
Then it continues on with a list of other things: Love, abhor that which is evil, cleave to the good, be kindly affectioned one to another, not slothful in businesss....on down thru the chapter.

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God
Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.
I homeschool because I believe its what God wants me to do. As I seek Him, He helps me with the task that I am taking on.
I have learned some things while home educating my children. I have learned that homeschooling is not for everyone. I have learned that in the beginning, some family members were uneasy about it, but as the years go by, it is more accepted and understood. I have learned that God gave Moms and Dads the wisdom to teach THEIR OWN children and that Families can do it differently and still be pleasing the Lord.
I went to a seminar in 2003 and heard a lady speak and she said this- Homeschooling should be like a 3 legged stool- those 3 legs being Study/Work/Service. Any one of these overdone can be a problem, but using all three legs keeps your family in balance.
Study- Reading, writing, Bible, Math, Science, Art all the usual classes, plus Sunday school, church services and I like to include Special Preaching meetings- traveling to Revivals/Missions conferences etc. (Bible learning and SOCIALIZATION! LOL) Too much of this and none of the other can make the children all puffed up, conceited and without consideration for others.
Work- as in housework, yardwork, play work- (like Legos, dolls, playdough, and other play- this is the kind of work children like BEST!) crafts, wood work, hunting work, fishing, sewing, exercise work, cooking, laundry, etc . Too much of this and no Study- well, lets just say Bartholomew cant read.....???
Service- serving others- Nursing home ministry, 4H programs- community service, church clean up, Fair Booth ministry, Food Bank, raking leaves for a neighbor , you fill in what your family does to serve. Children learn manners and kindness and to think of someone besides SELF.
One other thing she said- You cant homeschool if youre not HOME. Meaning, too many field trips, parties, vacations and other interruptions take away from their education.
I thought this was very wise counsel from this lady. The only thing I would add to it is PRAYER.

Things
Things I think about.....
Why I do certain things. Why other people do things. What are we looking for in these things that we do.
Let the peace of God rule in your hearts.
Where will I be in 5 yrs? What will I be doing? What will my children be doing in 5 yrs?
Psalm 78 teach children about God, his strength, his wonderful works.....WHY? That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God.
That they might not be stubborn and rebellious.
I think about that I dont want sin to have dominion over me.
about God's characteristics like, Merciful, Holy, gracious, a strong Lord, a Father, my refuge and my fortress.
That He planted the ear, formed the eye, that He made me and knows my weaknesses.
I think about friends and how God has placed certain people in places for specific reasons- far away ones that I miss, and near ones that I cannot seem to get close to.
I think about traveling to places and how there are Christian people all over this world, that you meet up with them and that its like a big Family reunion. And Family on this earth, that are not saved, that wont be there in Heaven for the reunion.
nov 9, 1992 I got saved. I am thankful .
I think about babies. I love my children. I am so glad God gave them to me. I love other peoples babies, esp the ones in our church right now...
having clean water to drink.

He does all things well , just different than I think they are going to be done!
So now I am sitting here trying to figure out what to do. Greg had to go away to work in Bellingham. I am depressed and crying about it for 2 days. All the while, I am reading my Bible and the Lord is telling me things like , "Psalm 11:1 In the Lord put I my trust " and the Lord is always before me my heart is glad , rest in hope and Let us draw near with a true heart and more and more . Comfort from the word of God. (Psalm 119: several verses) Monday - I call the man at Discount Tire in San Diego, and explain the situation and he says, thats not my problem, I told your husband not to put it in 4 wheel drive etc etc.
So I am upset, but not distressed. I keep reading Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday- And let the peace of God rule in your hearts ...... and I keep reading Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ and more The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? .....the Lord will give strength to his people and will bless his people with peace. More and more , the Lord telling me , "Its gonna be alright. I am gonna take care of you" .
So Thursday afternoon, after getting the ok for AAA to tow my car, I call Discount Tire in Hayden ID. I tell the man who I am and the situation and he says, oh we've been expecting your call. When can you bring the car in? We are gonna take care of it so you shouldnt have to pay anything.....
Friday morning, I am waiting for the Tow Truck, I leave my kids at home and the Tow TRuck driver Rick , starts loading my car onto his trailer. After explaining my problems, he says Maam they did you wrong. Even my 16 yr old boy knows you dont put mismatching size tires on a 4x4 vehicle. This is bad....So this very compassionate Tow truck driver then tells me I am the 2nd Suburban he has picked up today (its only 8:30 am!!!!!!!) and we have a nice conversation on the way. I think perhaps Rick was an angel. Think I am crazy but here it is. When we get there, he starts telling me, ok Anna now you go in there and dont let them take advantage of you. (he is coaching me!!!) telling me Be Steadfast now, explain your problem and wait for them to take care of it. Be Steadfast....
The manager of Discount Tires here in Hayden Idaho is a really nice man named Mike Jordan, a white guy (LOL) . He takes the car for a ride and knows its BAD. They GIVE US 4 BRAND NEW TIRES for our Suburban (the right size too!! ) Then he gets on the phone with Discount Tires Corporate office and gets them to open a claim to fix the damage done to our car. WOW Praise God!!!!!!!
Then they tell me what mechanic to go to , the Mechanic is a really nice man named John , and he says We're gonna take care of you. The transfer case alone is about $1600 plus labor, plus any other damage there may be. WOW again!!!!!
THEN, Discount Tires COrp calls and says do you have a car to get around with while your car is being worked on?? Well, no I dont since Greg is working over in Bellingham WA right now....So then they make a reservation and PAY for me a rental car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just never thought it was gonna come out like this!!!
So Praise and thanks be to God. I have now been driving a rental car for a week, and they are not done working on my car yet, but it will be soon.
He does all things WELL.
And sends me comfort thru the scriptures, and thru 3 brotherly fellows telling me , its gonna be alright. Were gonna take care of you.

He does all things well
When we were in California on vacation, we had a problem with our Suburban. We got to the Econo Lodge in Buttonwillow CA (the WORST hotel I have ever stayed in in the United States- another story) and I looked at one of the front tires and noticed that there were threads showing. After checking in, I showed it to Greg and he said ok we will have to put the spare on tomorrow moring and drive into San Diego on the spare and get a new tire when we get there.
So 6:30am Sunday morning, Greg and Caleb changed the tire and we were on our way. We were praying about what to do about this unexpected expense, as we were on vacation and didnt really have extra money to buy tires. We did not tell my family that anything was wrong, but we prayed. Grandma Helen showed up on Monday and gave us a card with some money in it for our Anniversary!! She said use it for your trip or whatever you need. Well we needed a tire!!!
Praise God. So the next morning, Greg went to Discount Tires in San Diego and they did not have the right size tires for our Suburban. The man tells Greg he could get these other tires, slightly smaller than the size needed, and that it would be fine as long as we didnt put the car in 4 wheel drive. So we did this (not knowing it would be a problem) and enjoyed the rest of our time in San Diego and began driving home to Idaho.
Somewhere in the middle of the state of CA, we started hearing a noise. Greg was not sure what this noise was. So he asked me, do you hear that??? Well it continued all the way home and after a week of being home, the noise was getting worse and worse.
A friend of ours is a mechanic who works on Suburbans all the time. He came over and drove the car and heard the noise and said dont drive that car. You need to get those tires off as soon as possible.

Trip to California
We just got back from our vacation in California. I got the idea in February, that I wanted to go see my family, but I wanted to go when it was WARM still and we could swim, but not during the MAIN part of summer when all the crowds are there. So I decided Labor day weekend- Week would be a good time.
We left on Friday Sept 2 after Greg got home from Work- DRIVING. So we drove Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We cruised into Corona CA to Grace Baptist Church Sunday morning at, 11:59 or so.....We had a tire problem along the way, so we walked in just as Pastor Shanks was praying the closing prayer and heading to the back of the church to shake peoples hands.! We did get to see our friend Andy Greenhill and his 2 little boys. That was a blessing. Good to see fellow PBI grads out serving the Lord!
Will finish this later. Gotta go make dinner. =-)
Phone company towers on the church property. The church gets paid by the phone company a pretty big sum to have these FAKE palm trees on their land.

fickle
Fickle: marked by lack of steadfastness, constancy, or stability : given to erratic changeableness
I have been fickle in my life. Let me count the ways. I have been pondering these things for quite a while now and finally decided to write them down. I began writing this as DIVORCE but seeing the Websters definition, I am convinced that Fickle is the better word.
I lived in a house in San Diego from 73-89. 15 years is pretty stable.
After that I moved 23 times in 13 yrs.
I had 15 places of employment in 8 years. Not because I was fired, but because I thought I was INVINCIBLE and that each job was a STEP UP ... always wanting something better.
I had 15 boyfriends in 9 years. Ages 13-21. whew. nuff said. Not saved, not a good path to follow.
Since I have been saved, I have been a member of 8 churches. 8 churches in 18 years... same thing, quitting them to move on to "something better" .
I see this as Fickle. We have been here in Rathdrum now for almost 9 years. I feel stability and comfort staying in the same house. We have been at Heritage Baptist church for almost 9 years, I feel stability and strength and growth being in this church. My kids feel this too and are blooming because of it.
I look around me and see many other fickle people, unwilling to "stick and stay and make it pay" as our pastor says. Quitting on marriages, jobs, friendships, churches, etc. Unwilling to have grace with the Family of God, forbearing one another and forgiving one another.
I am glad we are here and I hope that by all of this, we become "stedfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord" .( and not fickle)
